A Resource for Educators
We have developed a set of modules that can be used to teach youth and adults about environmental justice. The modules are built around case studies and examples from Rochester, NY but can be used by anyone who wants to help themselves and others understand environmental justice.
Built into these lessons is an instructional approach that is empowering and just. They give learners the chance to share and understand diverse perspectives and construct their own understanding of what they learn.
Each of the modules includes instructions for teaching the module and student materials. The modules are designed to be delivered in a variety of settings and are aimed at learners ages 12 and over.
Defining Environmental Justice
Module 1
The purpose of this module is to introduce learners to the concept of environmental justice as social justice. Learners will begin with a virtual “gallery walk” looking at images from different environments and reflecting on similarities and differences, framed through a lens of fairness. Learners will then identify words and concepts related to environmental justice in the context of stories about these issues. Learners will then represent their understanding of EJ in a creative work.
